Abstract

Potable reuse involves the use of purified water produced by an advanced water treatment facility (AWTF) treating effluent from a wastewater treatment facility. To optimize the performance of the AWTF, effluent from the wastewater treatment facility must be of the highest quality possible. Source control programs are designed to enhance the effluent quality of the treated wastewater by limiting the discharge of substances to the collection system that could impact the performance of the wastewater treatment facility and/or affect effluent quality. Most conventional source control programs are focused on the contributing service area to a treatment facility. Enhanced source control programs are more rigorous and include many more constituents. In addition, the design and operation of the wastewater treatment facility will also impact effluent quality. The implementation of comprehensive source control which includes the collection system service area and the wastewater treatment plant is expected to produce a more consistent high-quality effluent needed for the optimal performance of AWTFs, making potable reuse a feasible option for more communities.
